The Story Behind the Stone │ Richard Joseph Malvesti

Colonel (Dec.) Richard J. Malvesti was the ultimate quiet professional, a hard-nosed leader whose 23-year military career mirrored the rise of modern American special operations. Born on November 11, 1945, in Quincy, Massachusetts, he enlisted during the Vietnam War and quickly proved himself in combat, earning the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. Over the next two decades, he served in some of the Army’s most elite formations, wearing the tabs and berets of the Airborne, Rangers, and Special Forces.

Whenever the nation needed a force at the tip of the spear, Malvesti was there. He deployed during Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada in 1983 and Operation Just Cause in Panama in 1989. His reputation for tactical skill and calm leadership eventually brought him to the highest levels of special operations as Director of Operations (J3) for the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), where he helped plan and oversee some of the nation’s most sensitive missions. His exceptional leadership had him slated for even greater responsibility; at the time of his passing, he had already been selected for one of the most prestigious commands in the special operations community: Commander of the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne).

Tragically, Colonel Malvesti’s career ended not in combat, but during training. On July 26, 1990, at age 44, he was killed in a parachute accident during a routine jump at Holland Drop Zone, Fort Bragg. His decorations included the Legion of Merit, two Bronze Star Medals, one for valor, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and two Meritorious Service Medals. In 2012, he was inducted into the U.S. Army Ranger Hall of Fame.

To honor his legacy, the Army named one of Ranger School’s most demanding challenges after him: the Malvesti Obstacle Course at Camp Rogers, Fort Benning. Known for testing exhausted candidates to their limits, the course combines rope climbs, log obstacles, and the infamous 100-foot “Worm Pit,” where students crawl through thick Georgia mud beneath barbed wire.

More than a physical event, the Malvesti course is a test of determination and resilience. Designed to expose weakness and reward perseverance, it serves as a lasting tribute to Colonel Malvesti’s uncompromising standards and warrior spirit. Every Ranger candidate who emerges from the mud and completes the course honors a leader who gave everything in service to his country. Rangers Lead the Way.
